The Israeli cabinet has approved the construction of 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, as the far-right government seeks to diminish the prospects of a future Palestinian state.
The ultranationalist finance minister Bezalel Smotrich described their approval as an act of “moral Zionism”. Most of the international community views Israeli settlements as illegal, with the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip seen as the basis of a future Palestinian state.
“Within three years we have regulated 69 new settlements — a record like no other,” Smotrich, who also holds a senior position in the defence ministry, wrote on X. “We are thwarting in the field the establishment of a Palestinian state.”
