Obama has ushered in a new paradigm for power dressing, built from the bottom up. She used “underdog” designers that the establishment had overlooked, such as Isabel Toledo, Maria Pinto and Zero by Maria Cornejo; she sported affordable brands such as J. Crew and H&M; she had a penchant for asymmetrical designs and busy abstract prints, both hitherto considered to be unsuitable for a first lady; and her layers of casual separates with big statement accessories demonstrated a relaxed, DIY approach to styling.
