Mitt Romney hit the campaign trail in New Hampshire yesterday after the narrowest of wins in the Iowa caucuses, seeking to regain his mantle as the unstoppable Republican nominee for president.
The former Massachusetts governor’s campaign was boosted by the endorsement of John McCain, his once-bitter foe and the previous nominee. But as the frontrunner, Mr Romney conceded he now had a “target on his back”.
Mr Romney won in Iowa by just eight votes over Rick Santorum, the evangelical conservative. Both received about 25 per cent of preferences, with the victor failing to increase the share of votes he won in 2008.
