Buckingham Palace announced the birth of an heir to the British throne on Monday evening, the first son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The new prince – yet to be named – was born at 4.24pm, after a day of waiting and speculation by the world’s media and crowds outside the west London hospital where he was delivered.
The birth of a son means the UK may have to wait another generation to see a new law of succession in practice, a major constitutional change that would have enabled a girl to inherit the throne even if she were to have a younger brother.
