A violent earthquake has struck central Italy, killing at least eight people and destroying dozens of buildings across the regions of Lazio, Umbria and Marche.
The epicentre of the quake, which took place around 3.36am local time, was near the town of Accumoli in the north-east of the Lazio region, 10km south-east of Norcia, a town in the province of Perugia. The quake, which was followed by a series of aftershocks up to an hour later, were felt across central Italy as far as Rome.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the US Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 6.2, and a relatively shallow depth of 10km.
