The renminbi touched its weakest level since January on Thursday in the face of a strengthening dollar, nearly wiping out gains made by the Chinese currency during 2018.
The onshore renminbi exchange rate weakened as much as 0.4 per cent on the day to Rmb6.497 per dollar.
That marked the weakest level in more than five months and brought it 1.5 per cent lower against the greenback compared to a week ago, just before US President Donald Trump approved $50bn in tariffs on imports from China.
