The Israeli military said a ceasefire in Gaza had gone into effect, triggering the start of a 72-hour window for the release of hostages by Hamas as part of the first phase of Donald Trump’s peace plan for the territory.
The Israel Defense Forces said that, as of noon local time, its troops had completed their partial withdrawal, pulling back to “updated deployment lines in preparation for the ceasefire agreement and the return of hostages”.
Steve Witkoff, the US president’s special envoy, said that Hamas now had until Monday to release the Israeli captives. “The 72-hour period to release the hostages has begun,” he wrote on X.
